44,000 defective helmets recalled by U.S. Army

by Administrator 25. August 2010 14:00

44,000 Advanced Combat Helmets were recalled by the U.S. Army following reports that the helmets failed to meet military standards and may not provide adequate ballistic protection. The helmets were produced by U.S. manufacturer ArmorSource, LLC, based in Hebron, Ohio. The Department of Justice is expected to investigate claims of defective material use, improper manufacturing processes, and faulty quality-testing on the part of the company.

According to sources familiar with the recall, 20,000 helmets were issued by the U.S. Army, while the remaining 24,000 were issued to soldiers in the Air Force and Navy. The recall is expected to affect 4% of the 1.6 million combat helmets in the inventory of the U.S. Army. Soldiers are encouraged to check the inside of their helmets to identify the manufacturer's label, and they may have to remove some of the pads to check the label to see if they have been issued a recalled helmet.

Soldiers depend on protective gear like helmets and body armor to protect them from harm. If a product is defective and fails to perform as expected, the individual may suffer serious bodily injury or death. Kellogg issues recall

by Administrator 1. July 2010 09:46

Last week, Kellogg's Company in association with the Food and Drug Administration issued a recall of several products.  Kellogg's Apple Jacks, Corn Pops, Froot Loops, and Honey Smacks were taken off shelves due to an uncharacteristic odor and flavor.

The company believes that the risk of health complications due to the products is low, Kellogg's suggests that consumers refrain from eating any of these products if an uncharacteristic smell or flavor is noticed.  Consuming the contaminated products can cause temporary nausea.

Approximately 28 million boxes of Kellogg's cereals were taken off grocery store shelves.  Kellogg's is offering coupons to customers who call the Kellogg Customer Response Center.

Phoenix-based pharmaceutical company facing may lawsuits

by Administrator 29. June 2010 08:12

The Phoenix-based pharmaceutical company, Matrixx Initiatives Inc., is facing another pharmaceutical product lawsuit after their last lawsuit was thrown out by a federal trial judge in Arizona in 2005.  Matrixx is now challenging the lawsuit that was reinstated last year.

The U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear their challenge against allegations of failing to tell investors that some users lost their sense of smell after using their Zicam Cold Remedy nasal-gel products on Monday.  The main issue of debate is when it become necessary for pharmaceutical companies to disclose reports of adverse side-effects in its users.

Plantiffs argue that Matrixx received twelve incident reports between 1999 and 2003 that Zicam caused users to lose their sense of smell, but never made these reports public and continued to promote the product as if it had no negative effects.  Matrixx continues to argue that there is no evidence that their Zicam products are unsafe.  Furthermore, in their address to the Supreme Court they stated their belief that a ruling against them could prove extremely harmful to the pharmaceutical industry, making companies liable for the smallest offenses of adverse effects from products.

Matrixx faces many other lawsuits and warnings from the Food and Drug Administration.  After receiving a letter from the FDA, Matrixx removed Zicam cold-remedy products from the market.

AZ Driver Claims Runaway Prius Almost Killed a Man

by Administrator 13. April 2010 02:39

A driver in Valley, Arizona claims his runaway Prius nearly killed a man last month.

"It was one of the scariest incidents I have ever been in," Chuck Schmeiser said. He is speaking of an incident that occurred last month in his two-year-old Toyota Prius.  While trying to park in a field at a music festival, Schmeiser says his Prius shot forward, struck a parking lot attendant, and veered out of control over a dirt embankment. "It happened so fast. It was instantaneous. There was no advance warning whatsoever," he said.

"M foot was on the brake to stop the car when it started to surge. All I did was press the brake as hard as I could," Schmeiser said. "That brake did not stop the car."

Schmeiser had his car towed to a dealership. A specialist was brought in to examine the vehicle and determined the incident occurred due to driver error. Schmeiser says he did nothing wrong. He says he was skeptical of other reports of runaway cars, but the incident changed his mind.

"We had talked about it, and said they must be doing something wrong... and until it happens to you, you realize they weren't doing anything wrong, it's the car."

Texting Ban Approved by Senate

by Administrator 8. March 2010 02:34

The Arizona State Senate gave preliminary approval to a ban on texting while driving Thursday.

The vote on Thursday resulted in 17-11 approval of the bill. The measure will get a finale Senate roll-call vote next week, and still needs to pass the House. The bill was introduced more than three years ago, but Thursday's proceedings are the first time the measure has gained Senate approval.

The proposed law would result in a $50- $200 fine for texting drivers involved in an accident.

Senator Russell Pearce, R-Mesa, thinks the bill is unnecessary, he questioned why the particular distraction of texting merited a law. Pearce said "If you drink your BIg Gulp, its OK... If you're reaching down to get somethig off the floor and not looking at the road, you're OK. If you're changing the radio station, you're OK. If you're putting on makeup, you're OK..."

Braking Software Malfunctions in 2010 Toyota Prius

by Administrator 4. February 2010 03:12

Toyota announced on Thursday that a software glitch iscausing braking problems in 2010 model Prius’s.

The car company changed the software in their braking systemin January as part of their “constant quality improvements.” Toyota officialsexplained the braking problem as a “disconnect” in the vehicle’s complexanti-lock system that causes a one second lag. To put this in perspective, avehicle traveling at 60 mph would cover almost 90 feet before the brakes beginto take hold.

Hybrid cars like the Prius operate differently from brakesin most cars. The electric motors in hybrids help to slow the vehicle inaddition to the brakes, generating electricity to recharge the battery.

When asked whether a recall was in the works, Toyota’smanaging officer, Hiro Yuki Yokoyama said “we would want to be given a littletime.”
