A female spectator at the National Hot Rod Association Arizona Nationals is dead after being struck by a flying tire when a dragster crashed.
A spokeswoman for the Gila River Indian reservation in Chandler, Arizona, where the racetrack was located, said a dragster flipped in the first-round race of the Nationals and caught fire. The impact of the crash caused a tire to fly off the car and into the stands, striking the woman.
The fan was transported by helicopter to a local hospital, where she died later that day.
In a statement on it's website, the National Hot Rod Association expressed remorse over the accident. "The entire National Hot Rod Association is deeply saddened by today's incident and sends its thoughts and prayers to the woman's family and friends," the statement said.
The accident is still under investigation.
