Phoenix man pleads guilty to manslaughter in wrongful death of bicyclist

Tuesday, 24-year old Timothy M. Kissida plead guilty to charges of manslaughter in the wrongful death of 52-year old Charles Waldrop last August.

Kissida was driving his BMW when he ran into Waldrop on his bicycle on August 8th, 2009.  Waldrop died in the accident.  Later that day, Kissida went to the Cash for Clunkers program to try to trade in his car, which he said was damaged after hitting a javelina.  Police later arrested Kissida after an tip to the department.  Phoenix police say Waldrop's bike had lights and reflectors.

Kissida also plead guilty to leaving the scene of an accident and tampering with evidence.

Man Sentenced to 14 Years for Crash that Killed Arizona Teen

An illegal immigrant who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in a 2008 car crash that killed a Mesa, Arizona teenager was sentenced to 14 years in prison on Friday.

 

According to Maricopa County prosecutor, 33 year-old Manuel Contreras-Galdean admitted to drinking six beers before a car crash that killed 16 year-old Kelly Tracy and seriously injured her 17 year-old brother Matthew. Contreras-Galdean signed an agreement last year in which he pleaded guilty to one count of manslaughter and one count of aggravated assault in the crash.

 

According to court documents, Contreras-Galdean had a blood-alcohol content of more than 0.19 percent - about two-and-a-half times the legal limit to operate a vehicle in Arizona.

 

The judge who heard the case credited Contreras-Galdean for 496 days in jail already served. He must serve four years of probation after his prison term.

Racing Fan Killed by Flying Tire

A female spectator at the National Hot Rod Association Arizona Nationals is dead after being struck by a flying tire when a dragster crashed.

 

A spokeswoman for the Gila River Indian reservation in Chandler, Arizona, where the racetrack was located, said a dragster flipped in the first-round race of the Nationals and caught fire. The impact of the crash caused a tire to fly off the car and into the stands, striking the woman.

 

The fan was transported by helicopter to a local hospital, where she died later that day.

 

In a statement on it's website, the National Hot Rod Association expressed remorse over the accident. "The entire National Hot Rod Association is deeply saddened by today's incident and sends its thoughts and prayers to the woman's family and friends," the statement said.

 

The accident is still under investigation.

NHRA Race Crash Results in Fan's Death

A spectator at the NHRA Arizona Nationals was killed Sunday by a tire that broke off a a vehicle in the race.

 

The woman was a spectator at the National Hot Rod Association's Arizona Nationals on Sunday, when a tire broke off a dragster driven by Antron Brown and flew into the stands. The woman was transported to Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix on Sunday, where she was pronounced dead.

 

A statement released by the organization said "the entire NHRA racing community is in mourning over the tragedy that occurred on Sunday in (Chandler)... Our hearts, our prayers, and our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the woman who passed away." The statement went on to say that the name of the deceased fan "has not been released to protect the privacy of her family."

 

The incident is reportedly the circuit's first non-competition fatality since the late 1970's.

Winter Storms Cause Multiple Accidents

Winter storms on Tuesday created hazardous conditions on Phoenix roadways, causing multiple crashes on I-10 and I-40. The icy conditions caused multiple accidents and a multi-car pile-up on I-10, leaving nine people injured and causing three deaths.

Vehicle fires left the eastbound lanes of I-10 near Casa Grande closed as fire crews attempted to extinguish vehicle fires and help the injured victims receive medical attention.

DPS Investigating Deadly Accident

The Arizona Department of Public Safety is currently investigating an accident that resulted in the death of one man.  The accident involved two vehicles and the vehicles involved were a tractor-trailer and a pickup truck.

According to reports,  the pickup truck entered an intersection when the light was red.  The tractor-trailer then struck the pickup truck in the intersection.  The driver of the pickup truck was killed in the accident and both vehicles overturned in the intersection following the collision. 

The accident is currently under investigation and more details should be released at a later time.

Toyota Announces Recall

Toyota announced that it will replace or reshape acceleratorpedals on 3.8 million vehicles as a response to an unintended accelerationproblem that has caused at least one fatal accident. It is the larges recall inthe company’s history.

Vehicles affected by the recall are: 2007-20010 Camrys,2005-2010 Avalons, 2004-2009 Prius’, 2005-2010 Tacomas, 2007-2010 Tundras,2007-2010 Lexus ES 350, 2006 – 2010 Lexus IS 250 and IS350.

The car company also announced it will install a brakeoverride system on the Camrys, Avalons and Lexus’.
