Earlier this month, the Obama administration followed up on a promise made to Republicans in the fall by approving funds intended to reduce medical malpractice.  25 million dollars worth of grants will be distributed to state health departments, medical centers, and universities.

The grants are intended to reduce injury and improve doctor/patient communications, and as a result hopefully reduce medical malpractice lawsuits and costs and lower liability insurance premiums.  In an address to Congress last September President Obama stated, "I don't believe malpractice reform is a silver bullet, but I've talked to enough doctors to know that defensive medicine may be contributing to unnecessary costs".

This past Monday, a two-vehicle accident occurred along Highway 169 leaving three injured.

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, a semi-truck and passenger vehicle collided head-on between mile markers 9 and 10.  Central Yavapai and Camp Verde firefighters had to remove the two passengers of vehicle after the accident.  One was flown to John C. Lincoln North Mountain Hospital in Phoenix, while the other was flown to Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix.

The driver of the semi was taken by ambulence to Yavapai Regional Medical Center East for treatment.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety officials are still investigating what caused the accident.

A single-engine Piper Saratoga airplane crashed into a two-story Round Valley High School building about 200 miles east of Phoenix this past Friday.

The crash occurred very shortly after takeoff from Springerville Municipal Airport in Eagar, Arizona.  Also, the airplane was found to be registered to pilot Jeffery Ulrich of Wesley Chapel. 

The plane appeared to be having difficulty according to witness who saw the plane circling around the building for a few minutes, then suddenly nose-dive directly into the school.  Nobody was in the building at the time of the accident and there were no ground injuries.  The building remained on fire for a few hours after the crash until fire crews were able to stop the flames.

Police found the remains of four people at the scene but they remain unidentified.

A Phoenix policeman, Officer James Waltermire, sacrificed himself when he saw headlights coming at him on Loop 101.  

Waltermire was traveling westbound on Loop 101 at 1:45 AM yesterday when a wrong-way driver headed towards him.  Waltermire turned on his siren and flashed his lights while driving in a zigzag pattern to warn drivers behind him.  The Ford then hit Waltermire's car and a Suburban.  Waltermire suffered only minor injuries, while none of the Suburban's passengers were hurt.

The driver of the Ford was caught after fleeing the scene and identified as 31-year old Michael Chicharello.  Officials say a breathalyzer test showed Chicharello to have a blood alcohol content of over three times the legal limit, at .252.

The Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Arizona will be offering a short-course in Advanced Aircraft Accident Investigation from August 2-6, 2010.

The course is intended to be taken after completing their course in accident investigation management.  The course will introduce students to the procedures of advanced aircraft investigation, including materials, design, and performance.

Other topics include, survivability, crash testing, emergency response, loads, and other mechanical and structural analysis.

The students will be able to work with simulated accidents in the nation's most complete crash facility, Embry-Riddle's Robertson Crash Laboratory.

29-year old Jessica Wayas of Congress, Arizona was is being held in jail on several charges after causing a serious car accident almost three months ago.

Wayas was driving her Ford Mustand with her two children when she hit a 71-year old man from Yarnell driving a 1980 Chevy pick-up head on.  The two children were not wearing seatbelts and all four were injured in the accident.

Wayas and her daughter were care flighted to a Phoenix hospital for treated to injuries of the upper body, leg, and head injuries.  The 71-year old driver of the pick-up was flown to a Phoenix hospital where he had open heart surgery, and continues receiving medical treatment and rehab today.

Recent blood tests showed that Wayas had a substantial amount of methanphetamines in her blood.  Furthermore, the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office determined that Wayas was undoubtedly at fault for the accident.

According to Phoenix law enforcement officials, an accident at around 10:30 p.m. Sunday night claimed the life of a local woman and seriously injured an off-duty police officer near 19th Avenue and Happy Valley Road.

The 28 year old police officer was off-duty and driving a Ford F-150 eastbound on Happy Valley Road when he was hit by a Jeep Grand Cherokee.  An unidentified 39 year old man was driving the Jeep westbound when he jumped the raised median and crossed over into incoming traffic.  The police officer driving the Ford was taken to the hospital for serious injuries and remains there, while the passenger, 27 year old Lisa M. Lechtenberg, passed away after suffering a number of injuries in the collision.

The driver of the Jeep suffered injuries but is expected to survive and his two kids, also in the car, only have minor injuries. 

Investigators believe the driver of the Jeep likely underwent a medical incident that led him to swerve into oncoming traffic.
