The Dangers of Second Hand Smoke
Every year, the amount of information indicating the serious dangers of second hand smoke increases. Not that long ago it was thought that when a person smokes, he or she is only hurting himself, which made the decision to continue smoking one of autonomy. Now that it is known that smokers can make those around them seriously ill, it is no longer a question of whether or not smokers want to hurt themselves – it is also a matter of whether they are willing to hurt others.
Nonsmokers who are around smokers for long periods are essentially “passively smoking.” They are exposed to the same nicotine and other various toxins that the smoker next to them is. If you or someone you love has developed a disease or disorder because of second hand smoke exposure in the workplace, contact the Phoenix personal injury lawyers of Haralson, Miller, Pitt, Feldman & McAnally, P.L.C. at 800-763-0964.
The Two Types of Secondhand Smoke
There are two ways that non smokers can become victims of smokers. They are:
- Side-stream smoke: smoke that comes from the end of a lighted tobacco device such as a cigarette, pipe or cigar
- Mainstream smoke: the smoke that is exhaled directly by a smoker
Second hand smoke can cause a variety of disorders including:
- Cancer
- Asthma
- Breathing problems
- Ear infection
- Lung infections
Unfortunately, when smoking is allowed in the workplace or another public area, nonsmokers can be placed at risk for these diseases without their consent.
